San Luis Pass County Park

We only live 25 miles from San Luis Pass, where West Bay opens to the Gulf of Mexico.  It’s only 25 miles as the crow flies but it’s a 55 mile drive by way of Freeport to the south or about the same distance by way of Galveston to the north.  Over Thanksgiving weekend we decided to try out the county RV park which is located right at the toll bridge over San Luis Pass on the Blue Water Highway.

San Luis Pass is a popular fisherman’s destination.  The powerful tidal flow draws salt water trout, red fish, and flounder and those fish draw the fishermen!  Most of the serious fishing takes place at night.  The park has floodlights that greatly increase the potential of good fishing.

Most everyone in the RV park has come to fish although the beaches are wide and sandy.  The signs warn against going into the water here as many have lost their lives to the rip tides.  If a visitor wants to surf or swim they need to head up or down the coast a short distance to get away from the pass.  The park has some nice cabins and a new playground for the kids.

The camp sites boast level, concrete pads and full hookups.  However, the campsites are really crammed together with just a few feet between campers.  If one came to fish it’s no big deal, otherwise there are many other campgrounds that are better for hanging around the campsite and enjoying the outdoors.
