Name: Samuels Public Library
Location: 330 East Criser Road, Front Royal, VA
Samuels Public Library has been serving the community since 1799. It is housed in a beautiful building about five years old and is well supported by the community. The library has free computer access for all ages and many comfortable reading areas, tables to work at as well as separate study and conference rooms. There is a computer lab open to any group when not being used by the library. For those interested in the local history visit the Virginia History Room which houses local history and some genealogical information.
Two special things I noticed: To better serve the health needs of the community the library has partnered with Warren County Memorial Hospital to provide flyers and a computer for the public to research medical questions. To encourage literacy they offer a ‘Book Club in a Bag’, this is a kit with 10 books, suggested study questions that checks out for 8 weeks so any one can lead a book discussion at any location.
The Young Adults and Children have their own areas where families can come and read, access the computers, play games and attend the many scheduled programs. The Library displays local art by the children and teens. Currently in the Children’s Department are small books that were made by local children expressing themselves. In the middle of the The Children’s Department is a beautiful mural painted by a local artist.
Along with traditional materials Samuels Library offers e-books, music, and access to many online databases through links on their webpage. This library and staff are encouraging literacy in their community.
