2017 – Lake Geneva Christian Center – Alexandria, MN

This is a beautiful place with great lake views, nice, up-to-date facilities plus a several old time camping cabins. We limited our involvement to attending the worship services which we felt were very good. As always happens with Church of the Nazarene events we met many people who know the same people we know.

One new friend suggested we put Prairie Lakes District Family Camp on our schedule for next year. I don’t think our travel plans will bring us to this part of the country next year, but I wouldn’t be surprised if we find our way back sometime over the next few years.

2017 – Lebanon Hills Regional Park Campground – Apple Valley, MN

Being that this is a really nice campground in an urban area you might deal with some sticker shock on the price, even though it is a county park.

Our TV found many local channels and I had no problem getting the satellite signal. Our Verizon 4G signal was a usable 1-3 bars.

If you can plan ahead, this is a very good Minneapolis camping option.

2017 – Sightseeing in the Twin Cities area, Minnesota

2017 – Minneapolis, MN light rail

There’s a lot to see in the Twin Cities and we enjoyed our sightseeing. Honestly, there’s still more to see.

The Mall of America lived up to its reviews. We were here a few years ago but this time we covered all the floors. I had read about the new Crayola store. We made that our first stop. There is every color of crayon and marker available there. One entire wall from floor to ceiling was filled with crayons and markers. A person could choose a box or basket and fill it with your choice of crayon or marker and pay for them at check-out. There are toys, jewelry, stuffed animals coloring books for all ages, as well as clothing. A really fun place to see. As we walked we found stores offering everything you have seen in any mall. Along with the stores the mall offers an Indoor amusement park with rollercoasters and other rides. We saw a water ride, a mini golf course and the aquarium. After walking all four floors and doing a little shopping we headed home.

Beyond all the sightseeing, we enjoyed the cooler summer weather, especially during the later part of our stay.

Campground Review: Dakota County Fairgrounds – Farmington, MN

Dakota County Fairgrounds is in Farmington, MN about 30 minutes south of Minneapolis. Its pure fairgrounds camping: a big, mostly level grassy area with no trees to speak of and just the basics for a RV. There are no sewer hookups but there’s water and 50 amp electric and a nearby dump station. The camping area is set up for clusters of four RVs to set up around four hookup power/water pedestals. That’s not immediately apparent upon arrival, though, because there are a few exceptions to that setup (along the roads) and also, some folks park a distance away from their hookup point and stretch cords to their hookups, giving them some elbow room from their neighbors. There’s a range of people in the campground – guys working in the area, retired people, and families all taking advantage of probably the lowest camping rates in the Twin Cities area.

We arrived on the heels of the area receiving three inches of rain and the wet, grassy campground was pretty spongy. Making matters worse for us, although we didn’t realize it at the time, one of the leaf springs on the camper broke just as we arrived. That meant one of our wheels was literally dragging against the floor of the camper as I drove out onto the grass. I drove to our spot, then tried to move the camper back a bit and got stuck immediately. The issue was mainly the broken spring but the soft parking area didn’t help any. A fellow RVer pulled me out and then diagnosed the real problem. The campground didn’t have an actual campground host at the time, and one of the other campers suggested to the folks filling in as camp hosts that I be allowed to pull up onto the only gravel site in the place, the vacant host site, where the 5th wheel could be safely jacked up and worked on. At that point, I needed to find a mechanic to install the spare spring I had with me. Before I knew it, Bob, who had pulled me out and diagnosed the problem showed up with his tools ready to do the repair. A couple of hours later the camper was ready for the road again. Jackie and I are humbled and thankful for the Good Samaritans who helped us in this breakdown.

The fairgrounds has lots of good gravel roads, so there’s plenty of places for a nice walk. There’s also Dakota Village on the property. It’s a small town of several carefully restored buildings dating back to around 1900. There’s a church, schoolhouse, drug store, blacksmith shop, and several other buildings. During the fair and at other times, local volunteers come out in period clothing to make Dakota Village come alive. There are also equestrian and canine groups that do training adjacent to the camping area. It’s fun watching these activities.

The campground does have restrooms (although the one right at the campground was undergoing repairs during our stay). I saw a single shower in the restroom, though, and it didn’t look very inviting – the toilets, though, were acceptably clean. We had full scale Verizon 4G and, with no trees to speak of, no problem getting a satellite signal. The county fair takes place in August, during that time all campers have to be out, as the area is used for venders and parking.

Sightseeing review: An Afternoon at Minneapolis’ Mall of America

We thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon at the Mall of America. After finding a parking place near a mall entrance we circled each of the three main levels, taking our time, enjoying the experience. There are many familiar stores and others I didn’t recognize. I especially enjoyed going into the Lego Store and seeing the huge completed figures on display there. I also liked the American Girl store and the Boys Adventure Store.

There are several attractions beyond shopping and eating. We walked through Nickelodeon Universe, an amusement park with a zip-line, several roller coasters, a flume ride, and a number of other rides for all ages. I can only imagine how popular this indoor venue is during the cold Minnesota winters. There is also the Sea Life Minnesota Aquarium and Moose Mountain Adventure Golf. In the exhibit area right now there’s the Barbie Dream House experience and a Star Trek exhibition.

It’s easy to see why this is a must-see place for visitors in this area.

Sorry to say because of some issues with the camper as well as some health-related issues we didn’t get to see several of the other area attractions we planned on seeing here. That will have to be done on a future visit!
