2021 – Lake Texoma Thousand Trails – Gordonville, TX – shortstop

We like Lake Texoma Thousand Trails and have stayed here several times. This stay, though, was just a short stop before we headed south. In fact, we intended to stay a bit longer but old man winter visited with the promise of even more cold, ice, and snow in the days to come. We decided to “get while the getting’s good” and headed south after just one night.

2020 – Lake Texoma Thousand Trails – Gordonville, TX

We enjoyed another nice stay at Lake Texoma Thousand Trails, near Gordonville, TX. The August heat was intense and that kept us inside more than we would have liked. However, there was a bit of a reprieve in the mornings and evenings. We took advantage of that to get some walks in and to sit outside and enjoy our morning coffee.

The virus has limited activities at Lake Texoma as it has most everywhere. However, the pools are open. They received plenty of action, especially over Labor Day weekend. I was a bit surprised to see several nice sites unused over the holiday. I’m guessing it was the result of unseasonably hot weather plus the virus concerns.

I’ve reviewed this Thousand Trails before, so I’ll just add a few more photos in this review. We enjoy this campground and will look forward to staying there again.

2019 – Lake Texoma Thousand Trails – Gordonville, TX

Due to the fact that Lake Texoma Thousand Trails, near Gordonville, TX, is located near the north-south route in and out of the Houston area it is often on our travel itinerary – either coming or going! We have stayed here several times and I have written other reviews, so there is no need to do yet another. This stay included the weekend prior to Halloween and the park went all out to make it a special time for the children. This is a popular weekend at the park and there were lots of children in attendance. Jackie enjoyed helping out with the carnival.

We also enjoyed worshiping with and visiting with our good friends at Denison, TX Church of the Nazarene.

2018 – Lake Texoma Thousand Trails, Gordonville, TX

We spent time here at Lake Texoma Thousand Trails near Gordonville, TX just a few months ago. In fact, this is our third stay at this Thousand Trails. There’s not a lot of sightseeing to do here, but since we have many friends in nearby Denison, it’s a good north Texas stop for us. Since I already have two longer reviews on this campground, I’ll just add a few photos here.

2017 – Lake Texoma Thousand Trails – Gordonville, TX

In spite of Texas late September summer-like temperatures, we enjoyed our stay at Lake Texoma Thousand Trails, Gordonville, TX. We were last here in May, 2013 and the campground is about the same as it was then. We appreciated the ranger giving us a list of vacant full hookup, 50 Amp sites that were available, I think there were 8 or 9. We picked the one that looked good to us and settled into a large, level, gravel site. There’s a $3 a night surcharge for 50 Amps – in fact, the power pedestals for those sites are padlocked until the surcharge is paid. This Thousand Trails has both a large “family” pool and Activity Center and a smaller Adult pool with spa and Adult Activity Center. There are many annual campsites that have been improved in various ways by the residents. A surprising number of the residents light their sites at night with “running lights” whether or not they are present. However, if a person arrives looking for a 30 Amp full hookup site they would have many nice spots from which to choose. The roads in the campground are typical Thousand Trails: read rough and pothole filled.

We had no problem getting a satellite signal and our Verizon signal was a solid 4G.

Our arrival day at Lake Texoma was a difficult travel day for us in which a tire on the pickup came apart, doing considerable damage to the pickup. As a result the pickup was in need of repairs and we needed to travel to Houston to pick up our car so we would have transportation during the repairs. The campground management worked with us as we dealt with these unexpected, unwelcome circumstances. We did shorten our stay by a few days as we needed to time our relocation days with the repairs.

One strange coincidence is that the last time we visited Lake Texoma Thousand Trails we had a tire begin to delaminate as we traveled. We had to stop and buy two new tires. Here we are four years later and, as we traveled to the campground we had a tire (likely one of those bought on that day in 2013) come apart, forcing us to stop and buy four new tires. It almost makes us afraid to schedule Lake Texoma Thousand Trails again!

Campground review: Lake Texoma Thousand Trails

Our overlong, road problem day brought us to Lake Texoma Thousand Trails. This is a beautiful park with several amenities: two pools, two saunas, and more. I guess I’d describe it as both full and empty. Thousand Trails has sold most of the place to long term renters so the park is filled with RVs. However, very few of them are occupied, at least during the week. When one arrives, you drive up and down road after road looking for a vacant campsite. And there are sites, you just have to hunt for them. What most people would consider to be the most desirable ones are all taken. Frankly, it’s a bit frustrating, especially when you’ve had road problems and are arriving five hours later than originally planned.

We did find a very nice site with a stand of cedar trees to either side of us. It doesn’t feel like a compromise at all and had there been vacant sites all over the place we would have still happily picked this one.

The preserve has a nice home-like feel to it, mainly because the many annual people have made upgrades to their sites, adding landscaping, decks, lighting, and the like. Two sites across from us are lit up every night even though the campers are unoccupied. There are also many nice little rental cabins.

Lake access is via a road that exits to the back of the campground. Honestly, if the place wasn’t called “Lake” Texoma and no one told you there was a lake nearby, you could stay here a couple of weeks and never discover the lake. However, there’s a big marina nearby. I think that’s the main access for the fishermen and boaters rather than the lake access from the campground.

There’s a big activity center here with games, TV, a store, and more. There’s also an adult lodge with comfortable seating, a nice deck, and laundry facilities. One night we went to the adult sauna. It was relaxing. I opted to not get into the pool as the water felt just a bit too cool for my liking.

We had a night and morning of big storms here and are thankful that the individual cells kept passing just north or just south of us. Our hearts go out to those who were not as fortunate as there was considerable tornado damage a hundred miles or so to the southwest of us. During the first part of the outbreak we went to the activity center rather than stay in the camper. I expected to see others but only one couple came in. Maybe we’ll adjust to weathering big storms in our camper but I kind of doubt it.

Just down the road about 10 minutes is Cedar Mills Resort and Marina – it’s a really nice spot with a restaurant, gift shop, and a big marina. This is where people with boats here at Thousand Trails go to launch (and go to lunch too come to think of it).

Today we got our first mail shipment via General Delivery. It went perfect and Jackie was relieved to receive some meds we had on order. We’re here till Sunday afternoon when we’ll begin our trek north toward Des Moines with a few shorter stops along the way. We’ll attend services here at the campground so we can make a quick exit afterwards. I don’t like moving on Sunday and, if things go as planned, this will be our only Sunday move all year.
